Just then, Carver's phone rang. He glanced at Sandling and she looked at him at the same time. They both felt the same bad feeling, he thought. He lifted the phone to his ear and said, “Hello,” as he turned and walked out of the office. Sandling got up and followed him. It was Gibson with bad news. Carver heard Smatten call out from behind them, “Hey, what happens now?”

He ignored the creep and focused on the call. “When did this happen?” Carver asked and waited. He rubbed his forehead. “And you only thought to tell us now?”

He listened. Then said, “What do you mean not a priority?”

Carver leaned his head into the phone and bit his tongue. He closed his eyes and forced himself to have a measured tone. His blood was boiling.

“He said he’ll only help if I testify at his hearing.”

He opened his eyes and scanned the horizon.

“Okay, okay, enough Bronwyn. We'll be there as soon as we can. Have someone from forensics meet us.”

He hung up and turned to Sandling.

“What's going on?” she asked.

“Found another victim,” Carver said. “Same modus operandi.”

Carver walked to the car. Sandling hurried along behind him.

“Where?”

“Savannah, near Forsyth Park.”

“Georgia? Do you think they’re connected? The names I mean, not the bodies.”

“Savannah? Don’t know. We’re going there now.”

“What else was that about?” Sandling asked.

“Deputy Gibson, our friendly foe,” Carver said.

“How so?”

“We’ve got a new nickname, apparently,” Carver said. “Yukon Club. The boys at Quantico are getting a real kick out of it.”

“I don’t get it—“

“On account of the remoteness.”

“Ah, it’s a backwater, like us,” Sandling said. “Got it. Is that why we weren’t informed about the murder?”

“She said we should be focussing on the Zimmer element, but let’s go,” Carver said and got into the car. “We’re already late.”

That would be the end of the conversation. He needed to think.
